Nell Ruby is a Visual Artist and Professor of Visual Practice at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta. Ruby’s artwork and pedagogy encourage active engagement in taking risks, especially in considering established system frameworks. Nell has been a professional graphic designer, cabinet maker, teacher and artist.

Her artwork spans a mix of media from videography, photography printmaking, large-scale installation, performance, painting and drawing. In her latest work visual stories animate rooms inside of kiln-fired glass houses. Textures, changing light and multiple voices and sounds invite you into a shared space that feels both familiar and new.

At Agnes Scott, Nell has been an innovator. She founded The Center for Visual and Digital Literacy, a student media support center established through funds from the Mellon Foundation. She oversaw ten years of Showing Thinking, an exhibition opportunity to showcase the way faculty and staff think through curating a gallery and conversation space to showcase the creative process involved in and necessary for original research in all of the humanities. She was one of the seminal six faculty elected by her peers to reinvent the college through the current SUMMIT program. She has collaboratively taught with professors of English, Anthropology, Art History, Visual Culture, History, Biology and more. She creates community through discovering creative sparks and making bad jokes.
