Who can take a class?
Classes are open to the public
Are there prerequisites?
Some classes have one, and it's listed on the class page. Intro to TIG Welding requires Intro to MIG Welding at MASS or have equivalent knowledge/experience. You confirm this when you buy. If you haven't taken the prerequisite, you can't take the class or have equivalent knowledge/experience, and your ticket isn't refundable or transferable.
What's included in the ticket price?
Your ticket price includes paying the instructor a livable wage, materials, PPE, and keeping the organization alive! You will be able to take home what is made during class.
What should I wear and bring?
Long pants and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Comfortable clothing that fits securely, with no loose sleeves, jewelry, or drawstrings. Tie back long hair. For welding classes, you will need to wear leather or canvas shoes (no synthetics) and cotton or leather long pants and long sleeve shirt (no polyester).
Be sure to bring water and a snack!
Do I have to sign a waiver?
Yes, every student, every class, with no exceptions. Sign it before class using the link in your confirmation email: . You'll also find a QR code posted in the shop. Your instructor checks that everyone has signed before the class starts, and anyone who hasn't can't take part.

Refunds and transfers
Your instructor handles these. Email them directly at the address in your confirmation email, not the general MASS inbox. Up to 7 days before class, you get a full refund, counted from the day you email. Less than 7 days before class, there's no refund, but you can send someone else if you give your instructor their name and email at least 24 hours ahead. No-shows get no refund. We cannot offer class credit at this time.
What if the class is cancelled?
If too few people sign up, or your instructor is sick, your instructor will cancel the class, at least 24 hours ahead when possible, and contact you. You'll get a full refund.

Where is the class and where do I park?
MASS Collective, 1116 Murphy Ave SW, Atlanta, GA 30310, in the Capital View area. We are specifically located in the very front where you see the curved facade with window blocks. The door will have a MASS Collective sign.
You can park in the front gravel lot.
When should I arrive?
You can arrive 10 minutes before class. The doors will be locked after 15 minutes after class time.
Who do I contact?
For refunds, transfers, and questions about your class, contact your instructor on the class listing. For anything else, email info@masscollective.org (keep in mind it may be a week until we can get to you). After class, your instructor will tell you about next steps, and you can ask about membership at any time. Click here to apply to a membership.
Memberships
-
Who is a good fit for membership?
MASS is an inclusive community workshop for fabricators, craftspeople, and artists. Members can work independently and safely in the shop, from experienced hobbyists to semi-professional and professional makers and artists. We also look for people who work well in a shared space. A good fit respects everyone, cleans up after themselves every time, reports problems, and takes care of the tools and machines. We have no paid staff to clean up, so the shop stays in good shape because members look after it. If you're new to a shop environment, an Intro class is a good way to try the shop first.
What membership levels are there?
Drop-In, Flex, and Full Access, billed monthly, with quarterly and yearly options. The membership page lists what each level includes and the current prices.
Is there a student or recent grad rate?
Yes. It's a one-year rate for students and recent grads, with full access and no storage, and it's limited to 12 members.
To keep this rate open for people facing financial barriers, we ask that anyone who can afford the standard rate please choose it.
How do I join?
Apply to become a member. It helps if you've already toured the shop with a fellow MASS member, taken a class, or had some exposure to MASS. If you haven't had a tour yet, we'll schedule one with you, or you can come to an open house. After your tour, we make sure it's a good fit for both sides, and then we'll give you a membership card with your next steps, or email them to you.
What happens after I join?
Before you can use the shop, you finish four steps: your payment goes through, you sign the waiver, you watch the orientation video and confirm it in a short form, and you join the MASS Slack. Once those are done, we set up your door access so you can enter the facility using the Unifi mobile app.

What do you expect from members?
Members look after the space. We have no paid staff to clean up, so it's on you and not on anyone else. We expect you to:
Respect everyone in the shop.
Clean up after yourself, every time.
Leave the space better than you found it.
Take care of the tools and machines, and go above and beyond for the community. Report anything broken or unsafe.
Reset a machine after heavy use so it's ready for the next person right away.
We have zero tolerance for negligence or harassment.
When can I use the shop?
The shop is open 24/7. Your usage of the shop depends on your membership tier.
When are the busiest times/days in the shop?
Wednesday evenings (6pm-9pm) are apprenticeship days so expect most machines to be occupied. Also, days when we have classes also tend to be busy.
Where do I keep my projects and materials?
You can keep personal tools & small materials in your personal cubby (if your membership level includes it). You can also upgrade or add-on storage at a fee. Pricing is listed in the storage area.
We have designated areas for large hardwood, flat stock, glue ups, and active project storage. We ask that you label everything using tags provided in the shop. Anything with no tag will be treated as communal materials. Any projects not actively worked on after a month will be deemed abandoned and will be scrapped and up for grabs.
Do members get a discount on classes?
No. Members and non-members pay the same price for classes.
Can I bring a guest?
Yes, but your guest is not permitted to use free standing machines and they MUST sign a waiver.
Who do I ask if I need help or something is broken?
-
How do I pause or cancel?
You can manage your membership here.
What happens to my belongings?
Take everything out of the shop no later than 7 days after you pause or cancel. After 7 days, anything left becomes communal property.
Apprenticeship
-
What is the apprenticeship program?
A need-based, access-based program with intensive hands-on instruction in woodworking and metalworking. You learn by building in the shop with experienced instructors.
Who is it for?
People who face real financial barriers, and people who consistently face discrimination and have been shut out of spaces like this one. It's for people ready to commit to showing up and doing the work. If you just want to learn a skill or try woodworking or metalworking, our classes are a better fit.
How big is a cohort, and how long does it run?
Each cohort has up to 8 people and runs about 8 to 12 months. MASS runs two cohorts a year.
What will I learn?
Woodworking and metalworking.
What does it cost?
Free!
-
How do I apply?
Check out this page to see if applications are open. If not, check back in next semester! We also announce updates on our Instagram.
How are applications chosen?
A small review panel reads every application using a scoring rubric, and reviewers don't see applicants' names.
-
What is the weekly schedule? Sessions meet on Wednesdays for about 3 hours (6pm-9pm), currently every other Wednesday. On off session Wednesdays, you are expected to come in and finish your projects. If not, you will fall behind the other students!
Do I need experience or my own tools?
Nope!
Can I use the shop outside of sessions?
Absolutely and it’s highly encouraged!
What happens when it ends?
You can either join to be a member or enter a work-trade agreement to help out MASS in exchange for shop & community access.
